We are an active program offering candidates experience in the full spectrum of cardiothoracic surgery services, including coronary artery surgery encompassing standard CABG as well as off pump and robotic procedures, valve repair/replacement, heart failure surgery, aortic surgery and percutaneous vascular procedures, thoracic oncology, benign thoracic diseases, heart and lung transplantation, and a strong emphasis on minimally invasive approaches. DESCRIPTION: During the thoracic surgery rotation, residents are trained in all aspects of thoracic oncology, including benign and malignant lung diseases, esophageal diseases, airway diseases, and mediastinal tumors. They also have the unique experiences of being trained in thoracoscopic lobectomies for lung cancer and in minimally-invasive esophagectomies. Residents gain expertise in all aspects of cardiac surgery, including coronary artery disease, valvular heart disease, thoracic aortic disease and heart failure. The residents also gain unique experience with robotic cardiac surgery, especially mitral valve surgery. Residents will spend a dedicated rotation with the Division of Vascular Surgery faculty who are leading experts in endovascular techniques. Residents rotate on the congenital cardiac surgery service at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital. During this rotation, they are exposed to the preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative care of children with congenital cardiac disease, including cardiac transplantation. The thoracic residency has a structured educational program. A weekly cardiothoracic teaching conference covers all topics included in the Thoracic Surgery Directors Association core curriculum. In addition, we have a monthly journal club and morbidity and mortality conference. The residents also attend a weekly review of the Self-Education Self-Assessment in Thoracic Surgery (SESATS). During these sessions, residents review questions covering all areas of cardiothoracic surgery with faculty members. Thoracic residents also participate in a number of animal and cadaver laboratories throughout the year.

DESCRIPTION: The Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Stanford Hospital and Clinics is pleased to announce the availability of a new, ACGME-approved, Thoracic Surgery Residency position “tracked” towards General Thoracic Surgery. This two year residency program will be initiated in July 2012 and was established for graduates of Surgery training programs who want to train as General Thoracic Surgeons. The program will emphasize broad experience in all aspects of general thoracic surgery – malignant and benign -- including an emphasis on minimally invasive procedures such a VATS lobectomy/segmentectomy, minimally invasive esophagectomy, and transcervical thymectomy. Advanced techniques such as sleeve resection, tracheal resection, anterior approaches to Pancoast tumors, lung volume reduction surgery, and bronchial laser/stenting will also be learned. The 2 years will consist of approximately 12 months of General Thoracic rotations and approximately 12 months of Cardiac Surgery rotations, preparing the trainee to sit for the American Board of Thoracic Surgery examination via the General Thoracic Pathway.
The position is available starting July 1, 2012. Those interested in starting July 2012 need to apply by Jan 15, 2012. Those interested in starting July 2013 will apply via ERAS and the NRMP. DESCRIPTION: The Tufts Medical Center is the flagship hospital for the Tufts University Medical School. The adult cardiac surgery service offers exposure to a wide variety of surgical procedures including on and off pump coronary artery bypass operations, valve repair and replacement surgery, repair of thoracic aortic aneurysms and dissections, operations for heart failure including ventricular remodeling surgery, cardiac assist devices and heart transplantation. The assist device and transplantation program has been the most active program in New England over the past five years. The congenital heart program is based at the adjoining Boston Floating Hospital for Infants and Children, a well-respected and freestanding pediatric hospital. In addition, the program has a growing thoracic and esophageal service. Virtually all of the thoracic and esophageal resections are currently performed using minimally invasive techniques. The residents also rotate through the Lahey Clinic Medical Center located fifteen miles away from the medical center. Here the residents receive superb adult cardiac and thoracic training in a community setting. Consequently the residents receive a wide exposure to both academic and community-based practices during their twenty- four months of training.
