DESCRIPTION: The Department of Surgery at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center announces the availability of a General Thoracic Fellowship position beginning July 1, 2011. The one-year Fellowship was established to enhance the education in General Thoracic Surgery for Cardio-Thoracic Surgery residents. The Fellowship will provide a broad experience in all aspects of general thoracic surgery, including the diagnosis, work up, and treatment of all non-cardiac diseases in the chest.  This includes a large experience in VATS, including minimally invasive lobectomies and esophagectomies.

The fellowship provides extensive experience in all facets of general thoracic surgery with particular emphasis on minimally invasive thoracic surgery and in particular VATS lobectomies. All aspects of the pre-operative, operative and post-operative management of the entire spectrum of general thoracic surgical patients is provided. In addition, experience is provided in minimally invasive procedures for benign and malignant esophageal disease, PDT, lasers, stents, EBUS in addition to navigational bronchoscopy (SuperDimension). The Division of Thoracic Surgery performed nearly 1200 cases in the last academic year, including approximately 250 VATS lobectomies. The fellow will work alongside the resident enrolled in the accredited Thoracic Surgery program at CSMS and will actively participate in all educational conferences and activities. DESCRIPTION: The Cardiothoracic Surgery Training Program at the University of Florida (Gainesville, FL) has an unanticipated vacancy beginning July 1, 2011. The ideal candidate is one that has not already started a thoracic program, but the right candidate interested in switching programs will also be considered. The program has over 30 years of experience training residents in thoracic surgery. The program is based in the university hospital, Shands at UF, with rotations at the Malcom Randall Veterans Administration Medical Center. All areas of cardiothoracic experience are available at the University of Florida, including congenital and acquired cardiac problems, aortic pathologies, pulmonary malformations and neoplasms, esophageal procedures, chest wall abnormalities and post-operative critical care. Newer modalities of cardiac and pulmonary transplantation, minimally invasive pulmonary and cardiac procedures, and electrophysiologic procedures are fully integrated into the training program. Finishing residents have been eligible for UNOS certification in Cardiac Transplantation since l984 and Pulmonary Transplantation since 1994. The depth and breadth of the complex aortic surgery performed has been a boon to graduating residents as a distinction in the competitive job market.

WASHINGTON

DESCRIPTION: The individual will gain experience in all aspects of surgical critical care with an added emphasis on the post-operative management of patients with cardiovascular and thoracic disease. The University of Washington Medical Center is the premier tertiary referral center in the Pacific Northwest with over 600 annual admissions to the cardiothoracic surgical ICU, including over 30 heart and 50 lung transplants performed each year. Furthermore, the Mechanical Circulatory Support service implants over 30 assist devices annually. In addition, the fellow will rotate on the Trauma/Surgical ICU service at Harborview Medical Center, which is the only Level I trauma center in the state and serves as a regional resource for entire the Pacific NW region, with over 4000 ICU admissions annually. Upon completion of the fellowship, the candidate will be eligible for board certification in Surgical Critical Care by the ABS.

The candidate must be Board eligible or certified from the American Board of Surgery, have completed an ACGME-accredited cardiothoracic surgery residency, or be enrolling or matched in an ACGME training program in cardiothoracic surgery.
