Program
Brigham & Women’s Hospital
Divisions of Cardiac and Thoracic Surgery
Boston, MA
2012 Interview Dates
March 2-3, 2012
Narrative
The educational mission of the Brigham & Women's Hospital/Children's Hospital Medical Center Cardiothoracic Surgery Residency Program is to train surgeons to function as qualified practitioners of thoracic and cardiovascular surgery at the highest level of performance expected of a certified specialist. This includes providing an optimum number of diverse adult cardiac, congenital cardiac and general thoracic operative experiences under supervision to gain surgical skills leading to eligibility for American Board of Thoracic Surgery certification. In addition, the program desires to train cardiothoracic residents for academic positions in cardiothoracic surgery. Each of the three services in this training program (cardiac surgery, thoracic surgery and pediatric cardiac surgery) have dedicated facilities for clinical and laboratory research.
The Brigham & Women's Hospital (BWH) is a 750 bed general hospital. The pediatric cardiac component of the program takes place at Children's Hospital Medical Center (CHMC), which is located on the Harvard Medical School/Longwood medical campus, immediately adjacent to BWH. There are currently four operating rooms for cardiac surgery, three for thoracic surgery at BWH, and three operating rooms at CHMC. Each service has separate dedicated intensive and immediate care units.
At BWH, cardiac surgery and thoracic surgery are separate clinical divisions and teaching services within the department of surgery, allowing the resident to focus entirely on that specific component of the training program when assigned to these services. Of the four residency positions offered for each year of the two-year training program, two positions are designated as being "cardiac track", and two positions are designated "thoracic track." For residents in the cardiac track of this program, the first year is divided into two six-month rotations between cardiac surgery and thoracic surgery at BWH. The second year is divided into two six-month rotations between BWH cardiac surgery and Children's Hospital cardiac surgery. For residents in the thoracic track, the first year is divided into two six-month rotations between cardiac surgery and thoracic surgery at BWH and the second year will be spent as six months as a chief resident on thoracic surgery at BWH and two months each at BWH cardiac surgery, Children’s Hospital cardiac surgery and BWH thoracic surgery elective.
Positions for the Cardiothoracic Surgery Residency Program are filled via the thoracic matching program of the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP). The NRMP program code numbers for the BWH/CHMC program are 1265 for the two cardiac track positions and 4265 for the two thoracic track positions. All resident applicants must register with the NRMP in addition to submitting an application to our program. The program accepts applications from resident physicians who will have completed an ACGME accredited residency program and begin the fellowship in July 2013. ALL applications for the cardiothoracic residency program must be submitted through the Electronic Residency Application Service, known widely as ERAS. Programs participating in ERAS may only accept those application materials sent electronically through ERAS. The program will not accept any additional supporting documents by mail.
Requirements and Deadline
Application requirements include:
-
ABS in-training exam scores
-
Three letters of recommendation from physicians who have worked closely with you during your general surgery residency or in your laboratory research.
-
Medical School Transcript
-
Dean's Letter
The deadline for receipt of your cardiothoracic surgery residency application and all supporting documents is January 15, 2012.
The program will have only one interview date, and will not be able to schedule any individual interview dates outside of this session. Interviews will be held separately for each individual track, and you must choose either a thoracic surgery or cardiac surgery track upon interview invitation. Any candidate who is invited to interview must contact the surgery education office to confirm their acceptance of the interview offer. If the program does not receive a confirming email or letter from you by the given RSVP date, it will not be able to schedule you for the interview.
The format for the day of the interview begins with a continental breakfast during the early morning check-in time, followed by an hour-long orientation session with the division chiefs and program directors. Following the orientation session, each candidate will meet with two groups consisting of the three or four key faculty members. Cardiothoracic surgery residents and fellows will be on hand throughout the morning to visit informally with the candidates between interviews and to conduct hospital tours. The interview sessions conclude with a buffet luncheon attended by all candidates, faculty, and cardiothoracic surgery residents and fellows. For the purpose of making travel arrangements, applicants may anticipate being finished with all interview and tour activities by 3:00 p.m.

2012 Interview Dates
March 2-3, 2012
Narrative
In order to meet applicants’ needs, the program offers two choices of interview day. The program is pleased to announce that Thoralf Sundt, III, MD, became Chief of Cardiac Surgery February 1, 2011. Dr. Douglas Mathisen is Chief of Thoracic Surgery and Thoracic Surgery Residency Program Director. The full-day interview will begin with breakfast, a formal orientation and overview of the program by Dr. Douglas Mathisen, Program Director, and members of the cardiothoracic staff. Following the presentations, the candidates will meet individually with the Program Director and Associate Program Directors, and participate in group interviews with Cardiac and Thoracic staff depending on candidates’ track selection. Candidates will tour the facilities with current residents. Lunch is included. If a candidate selects March 2, the day will end with a dinner with current residents and staff at a local restaurant. If a candidate selects March 3, they are invited to join the program on Friday evening, March 2, for dinner and commence their formal interviews the next morning. Please RSVP for dinner as soon as possible.
One of the established tenets of the MGH program is to separate Cardiac and Thoracic surgery as distinct teaching units to separate the resident’s periods of assignment to these areas. There are separate nursing units, intensive care units, operating rooms, faculty, and conferences for each service. This permits the residents to devote their efforts entirely to that area of the specialty that they are rotating through, taught by individuals completely dedicated to the field. It is the program’s goal to produce residents who are versed in all the contemporary aspects of both Cardiac and Thoracic surgery at the time of completion of the residency and to be certain that they are equipped by training and experience to commence practice in either or both fields at a sophisticated level. In recent years, there has been a greater emphasis on “tracking” residents in Adult Cardiac and General Thoracic surgery.
The residency program is two and one half years in duration, with three positions available for graduates of a five-year general surgical training program accredited either by the ACGME or the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. In the first part of the training program, rotations are selected from the Thoracic and Cardiac services at MGH and Children’s Hospital with a variation to match the resident’s particular interests. The second part of the training program is divided between Chief Resident on Thoracic surgery and Chief Resident on Cardiac surgery. Each year, one resident will be afforded the opportunity as Chief Resident in Cardiac surgery at Children’s Hospital. In the Thoracic track, there is a six month elective time for away rotations with those individuals having a special interest in minimally invasive surgery, oncology or transplant. Two one month vacations are provided.
The two services cover the entire spectrum of the specialty. The Cardiac service does over 1200 cases per year. There are busy subspecialty experiences in transplant, VADS, Robotics, transcatheter valves, and aortic surgery. The Thoracic service does over 2000 cases and likewise has busy subspecialty experiences in airway surgery, transplant, minimally invasive pulmonary and esophageal surgery, pulmonary thromboendarectomy, and thoracic outlet surgery. There are one month rotations on Cardiac Cath, Radiology, Oncology that supplement the training experiences.
There is a well established comprehensive simulation program, cardio pulmonary bypass course, didactic curriculum, case conferences, and interactive “expected knowledge” conferences. There are two Visiting Professorships, Postgraduate Course in Thoracic Surgery and many invited speakers during the year.
The residents attend one annual meeting of the STS or AATS and other smaller conferences. First year residents are sent to Board Review Courses for General Surgery and Thoracic Surgery to better prepare them for these exams and expand their knowledge base. Journal Club is held quarterly. We believe the training program is comprehensive and prepares the resident for the practice of contemporary cardiothoracic surgery. There is a strong commitment to finding jobs for all the trainees.

Program
University of Rochester Medical Center
Thoracic Surgery Program
Rochester, NY
2012 Interview Date
February 11, 2012
Narrative
The two year Cardiothoracic Surgery Residency Program at the University of Rochester is a mixture of both didactic and clinical service educational experiences, to ensure that our graduates are intellectually capable, and technically and emotionally mature surgeons.
Simulation Course in Cardiac Surgery - CT surgery is developing a national approach to utilize simulation in an organized fashion for resident education. Through the Grateful Donors Program at the University of Rochester Medical Center the program has recently purchased a computerized high-fidelity Ramphal pig heart simulator and developed a course to enhance skills for CT residents, general surgery residents and NPs involved in CT critical care. These skill sets are essential for the everyday performance of cardiac surgery and the care of post op patients and simulation represents the most important change in traditional curricula which allows residents and NPS to develop and master new skills outside the pressured environment of the OR or ICU.
First Year Level - Each R6 CT resident will have a 3 month rotation on one of four separate surgical services which include: a) Adult Cardiac A (Drs. Hicks and, Massey), emphasis on valvular operations, myocardial revascularizations, thoracic aortic operations, heart transplantation and implantation of ventricular assist devices and endovascular surgery; b) Adult Cardiac B (Dr. Knight), on this service there is special emphasis on off pump coronary surgery, valvular operations and endovascular surgery; c) Congenital Cardiac (Drs. Alfieris and Gensini), treatment of congenital heart disease including neonates and adults; d) Thoracic/Foregut Surgery (Watson, Jones, Litle and Peyre), this service includes significant exposure to operations for esophageal cancer, as well as the surgical treatment of reflux disorders and all forms of pulmonary diseases.
Second Year Level - Each R7 CT (Chief) resident will be assigned to the same services through which they rotated during the first year of their training. There are never two cardiothoracic residents on the same service. The R6 and R7 CT residents will have senior responsibility for the day-to-day care of patients and families on the service to which they are assigned. However, a resident may be asked to provide coverage on another CT service and be assigned to cover operations which do not conflict with their responsibilities to their primary service and which provide unusual educational value or operative experience.
