2018 TSDA Boot Camp

TSDA is pleased to announce the opening of resident registration for Boot Camp. Registration is open to first-year residents at traditional 2- and 3-year programs who start July 1, 2018, and fourth-year residents as of July 1, 2018 at integrated programs. Each program is invited to nominate one of their residents to participate in the 2018 TSDA Boot Camp, scheduled for September 13-16 in Chapel Hill, NC. Only one resident per program may be nominated. The program will begin in the early afternoon on Thursday, September 13 and adjourn at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, September 16.

The program is designed to provide incoming residents with an experiential foundation and hands-on practice in basic cardiothoracic operating skills so they are better prepared to enter the CT surgery operating arena. Resident and faculty participants will utilize simulators to enhance the learning experience and create real-world case and emergency scenarios. The TSDA Boot Camp was first held in 2008; the program has since provided programs and residents with numerous tangible and intangible benefits, including:

  • Exposure to a simulated OR environment for cardiac and general thoracic procedures facilitated by leaders in thoracic surgery education. This is particularly significant to residents whose programs do not offer this opportunity.
  • Extensive one-on-one interaction with faculty.
  • In just one weekend, resident attendees will meet their 20-hour simulation requirement mandated by the ABTS.
  • A report developed by the ABTS demonstrates that residents who attended Boot Camp are two times more likely to pass their Board exams than those who did not attend Boot Camp.
  • Past resident attendees continue to comment on the importance of Boot Camp as a networking resource for faculty and fellow residents to discuss educational and professional opportunities. TSDA continuously hears how residents continue to be in contact with other residents and faculty long after Boot Camp is over, and Boot Camp residents have returned as faculty members.

The intensive training and experiences gained at Boot Camp have resulted in extremely positive reviews by both resident attendees and faculty who volunteer their time for this important event. 2008-2017 resident survey results garnered the following data:

  • 100% of Boot Camp attendees agree that Boot Camp was time well-spent.
  • 100% of Boot Camp attendees would recommend Boot Camp to another resident.
  • An overall rating of 4.5 on a 5-point scale given to hands-on tasks in terms of helping participating residents gain skills and achieve confidence.
  • Of the Boot Camp survey respondents who their completed their CT surgery residency training program:
    • 85% agreed that Boot Camp gave them an advantage throughout their training,
    • 77% agreed that Boot Camp made them better surgeons.

Even with faculty volunteering their time and covering their own expenses, the high cost of Boot Camp allows for only 40 residents. The 2018 registration fee is $500 per resident. Programs are also responsible for covering all travel-related expenses (airfare and ground transportation), and half of lodging expenses for three nights at the Marriott Courtyard Chapel Hill (TSDA will subsidize lodging expenses and programs will be invoiced $270 per resident for the duration of the program). Programs are responsible for all lodging expenses above and beyond three nights. The hotel rate is $180.47 per night.

Please be aware of the following nomination guidelines that may jeopardize your program’s eligibility to nominate a resident to Boot Camp:

  • Non-payment of the 2017 Boot Camp registration or housing fee within 60 days of the 2017 Boot Camp invoice date, and/or
  • Non-payment of 2018 TSDA membership dues by July 1

TSDA is asking each program to consider the value sending a resident to the 2018 Boot Camp for a nominal charge. While we all face financial constraints, please remember that with the ABTS 20-hour simulation requirement, the Boot Camp registration fee is a real value, especially for those who have to pay for simulation expenses at their institution. This year’s training sessions include:

  • Cardiopulmonary bypass
  • Vessel anastomosis
  • One lung ventilation
  • Hilar dissection/lobectomy
  • Aortic valve surgery (mini-session)
  • Mitral valve surgery (mini-session)
  • Aortic root surgery (mini-session)

If you would like to nominate a resident to participate in this year’s Boot Camp, submit their name and e-mail address to Rachel Pebworth, TSDA Affiliate Manager, at rpebworth@sts.org by Friday, June 1. Please enter “2018 TSDA Boot Camp” in the subject line. If you do not receive confirmation of your resident nomination for Boot Camp within three business days, please call the TSDA office at 312-202-5854 to confirm your message was received. Nominations are accepted on a first-come first-served basis, as there is a limited number of spots for residents.
