The recent action by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery to make American Board of Surgery certification optional as a prerequisite to ABTS certification (at some time in the future yet to be determined) has generated intense discussion among leaders of organized Thoracic Surgery and among the thoracic surgical educators. A variety of restructuring options are being actively discussed, each of which will have major ramifications on the logistics, structure, and content of graduate medical education in our field. We the educators must play a pivotal role in the evolution of this process.
