The recent action by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery to make American Board of Surgery certification optional as a prerequisite to ABTS certification (at some time in the future yet to be determined) has generated intense discussion among leaders of organized Thoracic Surgery and among the thoracic surgical educators. A variety of restructuring options are being actively discussed, each of which will have major ramifications on the logistics, structure, and content of graduate medical education in our field.
