B. Lung Transplantation
Unit Objective:
At the end of this unit the resident understands the basic principles of lung
preservation and immunosuppressive therapy, recognizes and treats rejection, and
knows the indications for and performs lung transplantation.
Learner Objectives:
Upon completion of the unit the resident:
- Understands the evaluation and management of organ donors;
- Knows the indications for lung transplantation;
- Understands the management of immunosuppressive therapy in lung transplantation;
- Knows the techniques of single and double lung transplantation;
- Recognizes the signs and symptoms of lung rejection or infection and knows the
appropriate management;
- Knows the methods for harvesting and preserving donor lungs;
- Is familiar with the techniques and complications of bronchoscopy of the transplanted
lung.
