Echocardiogram, both standard and transesophageal, is very helpful in making the diagnosis of the aortic root aneurysm. In the preoperative evaluation of our Marfan patients, we feel that for individuals under 45 years of age, either a MRI, standard CT scan, or spiral CT scan along with an echocardiogram can provide all of the information that the surgeon needs prior to surgery. For individuals over 45 years of age, we would recommend obtaining a coronary arteriogram in addition to a scanning procedure.
